The county was first mentioned in 1210, as Požega County, with its headquarters in the Požega fortress. It is believed to have existed since the 12th century. The borders are also believed to largely correspond to today's: Pakrac and Psunj in the west, Velika and Papuk in the north, Pleternica and Požega Mountain in the south, and Dilj Mountain and Čaglin in the east.
