Global gas reserves

Proved reserves is generally taken to be those quantities that geological and engineering information indicates with reasonable certainty can be recovered in thefuture from known reservoirs under existing economic and operating conditions.

Natural gas is a highly desirable energy source. It burns cleanly, with less pollution than other hydrocarbon fuels and proved reserves of natural gas are immense—some4,900 trillion cubic feet worldwide at the end of 1995, enough for about 60 years supply at current world gas production rates. However, much of the world's known natural gas reserves are inconveniently located in remote and thinly populated areas, such as Western Siberia and the Persian Gulf.
