The county is located in northwestern Croatia. It surrounds the city of Zagreb from the west, south and east, so it is often called the "Zagreb Ring". Geographically, it is quite diverse with Marijagoričko hill and Žumberak in the west, low Turopolje and Pokuplje in the south, lowlands in the east. Hilly and mountainous areas prevail in the west, and lowlands in the south and east. The highest parts are Žumberačka gora and Samoborsko gorje in the southwest and the peripheral parts of Medvednica in the north. In the south, the low Vukomeričke gorica separates low Turopolje from lower Pokuplje. The largest plains extend to the east, in the Lonja river basin.
