Zagreb je kulturno, znanstveno, gospodarsko, politicko i administrativno središte Republike Hrvatske sa sjedištem Sabora, Predsjednika i Vlade Republike Hrvatske. Zagreb se razvio u podnožju planine Medvednice, a presijeca
ga rijeka Sava, na rubu Panonske nizine i 130 km od Jadranskog mora. Razvio se
iz srednjovjekovnih naselja Kaptol i Gradec, a kraljevskim je gradom proglašen
1242. godine. U 16. stoljecu postao je glavni hrvatski grad. U gradu Zagrebu djeluje
20 muzeja, osam umjetnickih galerija, pet arhiva, 550 knjižnica, osam kazališta,
zoološki vrt, a obiluje kulturno-umjetnickim dogadajima, medu kojima su Muzicki
biennale i Medunarodni festival folklora - najveci u Europi.
Zagreb is the capital of the Republic of Croatia and its greatest economic, traffic and cultural centre. Zagreb has developed in the foothills of the Medvednica mountain and is intersected by the Sava river. It is situated at the edge of the Panonian plain and 130 km from the Adriatic sea. It developed from the middle-ages settlements of Kaptol and Gradec and was declared a Royal City in 1242. In the 16th century, it became the Croatian capital. There are 20 museums, eight art galleries, five archives, 550 libraries, eight theatres, a Zoo in the city. Cultural-artistic contents abound, e.g. the Musical Biennale and the International Folk Lore Festival - the greatest of its
kind in all of Europe.
