Days of Apoksiomen

Days of Apoksiomen

Apr. 24 - 27, 2011

Dani apoksiomena - CroMapsThere are only seven preserved statues of the ancient Greek athlete Apoxiomen in the world, and one of them - a bronze statue - was found in 1999 in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea, close to the island of Lošinj, stuck between two rocks at the depth of forty-five meters. The athlete, over two thousand years old, was lifted from the depths of the sea and fully restored.

At the end of 2010, the Apoxiomen will be permanently exhibited in Mali Lošinj in the Kvarner Palace. To celebrate this significant archaeological discovery, during this time, the people of Lošinj will organise Apoxiomen days where visitors can look at a variety of exhibits covering the theme of Apoximen: a photographic exhibition, a pottery and jewellery exhibition, archaeological diving, antique gastronomy, antique hair styles, Greco-Roman wrestling, special hotel offers of Roman baths and massages... and thus they can bear witness to the importance of this discovery for our cultural heritage. /Text source: Croatian National Tourist Board/
